Grasshoppers is an outdoor program for 3’s (by April 1st) and 4’s. There are two class options: a 4-Day AM (M-TH, 9:00-11:30) and a 4-Day PM (M-TH, 12:30-3:00) These options are identical in all respects, including teachers and curriculum. The capacity for each class is 30 children. Depending on enrollment, each class is typically taught by three teachers and one teacher’s aide. At capacity our ratio is 1:7.
The tuition for Grasshoppers is $550.
Grasshoppers is located at: The First Congregational Church of Wilmette, 1125 Wilmette Ave, Wilmette, IL
A Typical Day
Grasshoppers is fortunate to have a dedicated staff of teachers who meet in advance to plan the curriculum. The curriculum is devised of 6 weekly themes which take the campers on a series of adventures with our friend “Grasshopper.” What may appear to be “just play” is actually the result of careful planning and an understanding of the young child. During our day, we offer a balance of individual choices and group time.
Individual Choices
Each day begins with a free play period during which the children move as they please among the different activities. For example, one may choose to play on the climber and then move on to the art center. Other activities to choose from include: water table, play dough, book blanket, dress up, kitchen, sand box, water play on warm days and bicycles. New activities are introduced each week.
Group Time
Free play is followed by hand washing, snack and a structured group time. As a whole group, the children may sing, share news, listen to stories or participate in movement activities.
Once a week during group time, the children will be Jammin’ with Julie. Julie Helenius is a musical performer and instructor who has been sharing her love of music with children for over 14 years. Julie is a long time instructor at the Old Town School of Folk Music as well. Julie will be jammin’ with drums, shakers, parachutes, puppets, bubbles and much more! The songs will correspond with weekly themes and culminate with a parent/child sing-a-long at the end of the session.
Family Activities
We offer parents the unique opportunity to join their child at camp for two family activities, our Farmer’s Market and Ice Cream Social/Sing-a-Long. Camp can be the first group experience many children have outside of their home. Our family activities offer parents the privilege of experiencing this important part of their child’s life.
Communication
Our newsletter will be available online every Friday while camp is in session. This will provide you with weekly highlights as well as reminders about special events.
